So you are wanting to take a Safari in the Addo Elephant Park?
A visit to South Africa would not be complete without visiting the Addo Elephant Park in South Africa. I had worked for a few years at the Cosmos Cuisine guest house just outside of the park, serving as the game ranger and general duties in the guest house.
The guest house itself is known for its food more than anything else, offering traditional south African meals and a variety of options for all.
Addo was created to ensure the protection of the elephants in the area after years of hunting which led to a small population remaining. This hunting also led to inbreeding in the small population of African elephants, which is why the females on the park no longer have any tusks.
Accommodation in the park is varied and can be anything from tented camps to private luxury accommodation, so this all depends on your individual needs. A alternative and what we would suggest is rather staying at one of the nearby game reserves, such as Amakhala game reserve, where I also worked. I was based at the woodbury lodge side of the reserve. The Woodbury Lodge is nestled in the side of a hill overlooking the savannah on Amakhala and has the mountain in the background as well, its quite a way to wake up in the morning and see that view. Carnarvon dale was originally created for the local south african market and is currently revamping itself as a self catering accomodation option.
Woodbury tented camp was created for a more outdoor experience environment, and is settled in the bush with raised platforms so you don't get unexpected visitors.
The bush lodge and Bukela game lodge are the 5 star establishments on the reserve, and offer the best experience for those seeking luxury.
Leeuwensbosch Country House is the family friendly location as they cater for children of all ages. The other locations have certain ages that can stay there. This is for the safety of the children due to how the lodges are constructed eg raised platforms, proximity to wildlife etc. Hlosi game lodge also offers accommodation for all ages, with kids programs available.
So whether you are looking for a special trip with your family, a romantic getaway with your new wife/husband, or just a outdoor experience, Amakhala will have a location on offer that will suit your needs and leave you feeling like you had the experience you were looking for.
